Planes, Trains & Automobiles

Friday Nov 17, 2023

Friday Nov 17, 2023

Martin and Candy. Tweed and Paul. Name two more iconic comedy duos... we will certainly wait.
Well, that was surprisingly quick. And a little hurtful, honestly.
Anyway, today is your lucky day because these four powerhouse comedy minds are coming together for a heartfelt Thanksgiving episode of the Confidently Controversial pod. That's right, it's 1987's Planes, Trains and Automobiles! A Turkey Day tradition for some, this John Hughes film takes the buddy comedy on the road to see what happens when people stop being polite and start getting real.
Hot tip? Bring a little more Del Griffith to this holiday season.  Not the butt cheek pillow part, but you know, the kind part.

Midnight Madness

Friday Nov 10, 2023

Friday Nov 10, 2023

It's midnight. It's also madness. What else do you need to know? No, really, what else? 1980's Midnight Madness sets five teams loose in the city of Los Angeles overnight to solve clues in what is called The Great All Nighter. Why? Well, I don't really remember why, except this weird dude named Leon who is about to get evicted told them to do it. Oh yeah, and Michael J. Fox is there.

Major League

Friday Nov 03, 2023

Friday Nov 03, 2023

Yay Sports! In this episode of Confidently Controversial, we've ditched the spooky movies in favor of a film covering a topic we know gobs about, baseball! The 80s and 90s were surprisingly thick with sports films, but only one featured Charlie Sheen getting paid to the wild thing... that's right, it's 1989's Major League! Our old podcast friend Tom Berenger is back and he's brought a ragtag crew, including Corbin Bernsen, Wesley Snipes, and Dennis Haysbert, to lead the Indians to a victory in an unnamed championship game that Emily and Kim are still fighting to name. Oh yeah and Renee Russo's incredible hair is there, too. It may be America's pastime, but these USA ladies struggled, not just with the sports chat, but also with the overt degradation of the Native American culture. Fun!

Join us for our first live episode as we watch 1999's Terror Firmer with Casey Kaufman himself, Will Keenan! Despite multiple warnings from Will and our ability to do internet research, we watched this Troma Film anyway and we actually kinda liked it. Chock full of guts, gore, boobs, and pickles, this film is at its best delightful in its humor and inclusivity and at its worst a close up shot of a prosthetic vagina that is real angry about something. While we don't get too far into the plot of the movie in our recap, we do have a fantastic convo with Will, hear about his life, and find out what it was like to be part of the Tromaverse.
A huge thank you to Will Keenan and Harbor Square Theatre!

Teen Witch

Friday Oct 20, 2023

Friday Oct 20, 2023

Sure, ghosts, ghouls, and dead things are terrifying, but to know absolute horror you must simply watch the rap battle scene in 1989’s mystifyingly wonderful Teen Witch. This Tweed Family fave does not have strong acting or a complete plot line, but what it lacks in quality is made up for in cringiness, iconic 80s fashion, and a little brother acting real gross. Robyn Lively, Dean Gauthier, and Zelda Rubenstein star in this Halloween cult classic that will truly change your life. Don’t believe me? Ask Ryan Reynolds.

Friday Oct 13, 2023

Well, here it is guys, the movie that truly scarred one of your hosts irrevocably for all of time – Poltergeist! We couldn’t traverse the confidently controversial landscape of spooky season without watching this 1982 film that haunts Emily almost daily. Starring our forever coach Craig T. Nelson, snappy dresser in the face of fear JoBeth Williams, America’s psychic Zelda Rubenstein, and of course the most iconic horror movie kid on the planet Heather O’Rourke this movie will have you checking your pool with dry bones, researching clown dolls on eBay, and questioning your husband’s abilities in a crisis.

Pet Sematary

Friday Oct 06, 2023

Friday Oct 06, 2023

Sometimes dead is better, but it is especially best when you take it upon yourself to bury your pets, children and significant others in a mystical native american burial ground that your weird neighbor told you about. In our first spooky Halloween episode of Confidently Controversial, we're watching 1989's Pet Sematary. It's a Steven King classic that guarantees you'll never leave your achilles unattended ever again.

The Last Starfighter

Friday Sep 29, 2023

Friday Sep 29, 2023

It’s not Star Wars! While you may be confused by the similarity of many of the space creatures, this movie is not a star war. It’s 1984’s The Last Starfighter starring Lance Guest, Catherine Mary Stewart and ol’ jazz hands Robert Preston. Join your Confidently Controversial hosts as they day dream about being so special that they are whisked away to share their talents in space or somewhere much cooler, like the writing room at SNL.

”Fame”

Friday Sep 22, 2023

Friday Sep 22, 2023

This episode of Confidently Controversial turned out much like the movie we watched this week - a little all over the place, full of weird comments, and with us blocking traffic. It's 1980's Fame! Join us as we explore life at a NYC dramatic high school, where the kids sing, dance, play music, and do whatever it was that Montgomery and Doris were up to. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll live forever. Fame!

Rain Man

Friday Sep 15, 2023

Friday Sep 15, 2023

Hot tip for anyone trying to get away with something - don't twin with your partner in crime. It, um, draws attention, looks weird, isn't necessary, costs a lot... Do I need to go on? On this week's episode of Confidently Controversial, Emily and Kim watch 1988's Rain Man featuring Dustin Hoffman and a very angry Tom Cruise. Certainly groundbreaking for its time, this movie introduced much of the world to Autism and garnered award noms for its leads, but leans controversial by today's standards.
